Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: This elegant plein air watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the distinctive charm of La Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, one of Provence’s most picturesque villages. Bathed in sunlight beneath a brilliant Mediterranean sky, the composition leads the viewer’s eye across terracotta rooftops and limestone cliffs, surrounded by rich green foliage and layered blue hills.
Neveu’s touch is deft and expressive — washes of emerald, ochre, and violet convey both the atmosphere and texture of the southern landscape. The interplay between transparent watercolour and confident pencil linework gives the scene rhythm and immediacy, evoking the fleeting brilliance of light across stone and vegetation.
Painted on perforated sketchbook paper, this piece was almost certainly completed en plein air, revealing Neveu’s keen observation and instinctive command of composition.
A graduate of the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts, Neveu went on to become Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, exhibiting regularly at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, later serving as President of the painting section. His landscapes celebrate the harmony between light, architecture, and the natural world — and this work is a serene example of that mastery.
