Alexandre Pavlovitch Chemetoff
Female Nude Study Black and Blue Pencil Drawing by P. Chem

circa 1940

$1,900

About

Charming woman nude pencil study by Russian/French painter Alexandre Pavlovitch Chemetoff (or Chemetov) also known as Chem (1891 - 1981). Very interesting representation on which only some trace lines and shadows mark the silhouette and posture and capture the expression of the model. The blue color emphasizes the design and imbues the lascivious movement. Carbon and blue pencil drawing on paper. Signed bottom right corner: P. Chem. Black and blue contemporary wood frame with a textured pattern with off-white matte and acrylic glass protection. Measurements: With Frame: 32.69 in. wide (83 cm) x 26.38 in. high (67 cm) x 1.19 in. deep (3 cm) View alone: 22.82 in. wide (58 cm) x 16.57 in. high (42 cm). Artist Biography: Alexandre Pavlovitch Chemetoff (aka Chem) (1891 - 1981) Chem was indeed a tireless all-rounder, illustrator, graphic designer, typographer, art book designer, and painter. This abundance of talent is undoubted to be found in the meanders of an adventurous life that marries the dramas of the 20th Century. Alexander Chemetoff was born in Russia in 1891, in Rostov-on-Don. He studied chemistry in St. Petersburg, mobilized in 1917, he is caught in the turmoil of the Bolshevik revolution, he embarked on civil war, and with the debris of the white army leaves Sevastopol and arrives in Tunisia, where to survive he uses his artistic gifts for drawing. Arrived in Paris, he experienced a difficult period, which will require him to work in all areas, from advertising to caricature in the press of Russian exiles, through the illustrations for the albums of Father Castor. During the war, refusing to make a deal with the occupier, he moved to Châteauroux. He will participate in the Resistance, putting his graphic virtuosity to make false papers. At the Liberation, back in Paris, he is a model maker, creator of beautiful books, and works for movie sets. No doubt by nostalgia for Russia, he gets closer to communist artists, works on an exhibition on Mayakovsky mounted by Elsa Triolet. Installed in Ardeche (south of France) at the end of his life, he can finally devote himself to painting and a series of surrealist collages, which, according to his son, "exceed in quality, in precision, in invention and humor those of Max Ernst". He died in 1981.
