About the Item
Raffaello Arcangelo Salimbeni, even if he was born in Florence, was raised in Siena by a maternal aunt. He move back to Florence on the 1936, after that the painter Giuseppe Vagnetti noticed him and requested his presence at the Institute of Art in Porta Romana, where he taught. There, Salimbeni followed the scultping lessons of Bruno Innocenti.
While he was enriching his plastic language, he also developed an interest in painting and his works of the Forties already show a perfect harmony between the two artistic techniques. His first paintings are mostly portraits and landscapes characterized by vibrant brush strokes richly colorful, displaying an unique and personal vision of the Expressionism. From the Fifties it’s possible to see a change in his style, that was influenced by Alberto Giacometti, David Smith and Germaine Richier.
He was the winner of the long and strenuous competition for the realization of the sculpture dedicated to Anna Maria Luisa dei Medici known as the Electress consort of the Palatine, now close to the Medici chapels, and he had a studio in Via dei Bardi from the 1936 until the 1985.
The drawing, pencil on paper 32 x 22.5 cm, comes from Salimbeni heirs' collection. It depict a lady dressed with a short skirt laying on one side.
