About the Item

A Very Finely Drawn Mid-Century Modern Figure Study of a Standing Young Male Nude Model (Torso) by Notable Chicago Modern Artist, Harold Haydon (Am. 1909-1994). A well executed studio figure drawing completed in 1951, showing Haydon's exceptional draftsmanship and skillful ability to draw the human form. Artwork size: 19 x 12 1/2 inches; archivally matted to 24 x 20 inches. Dated "6-VIII-51", upper right. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the Artist. Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He moved to America in 1917, settling with his family in Chicago, Illinois and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England, Vermont and Canada, as well as his dynamic urban views of the city of Chicago and its picturesque lakefront. Harold Haydon served as the respected, longtime art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.
