Provenance: Sarasota, Florida collector William Sanders Fanning was born in 1887 in Detroit, Michigan and worked as a staff artist for the Detroit Free Press for 25 years. Much of his career was focused on illustrations and commercial advertisements for the newspaper, and although he was trained in Paris as a painter, his work was not publicly exhibited until after his passing in 1964. Influenced by “fin de siecle” French painting, ( Fin de siècle is a French term meaning "end of century", a term which typically encompasses both the meaning of the similar English idiom turn of the century and also makes reference to the closing of one era and onset of another. The term is typically used to refer to the end of the 19th century), as well as the American Ashcan School, his paintings were soft, yet solidly composed paintings with an imbued humanist philosophy inherited from his forerunners.
