Walasse Ting
Oriental Woman

About the Item

A fine vibrant watercolor of an Oriental woman by Chinese/American artist Walasse Ting (1929-2010). Born in China in 1929, Walasse Ting is a self-taught painter, sculptor, graphic artist and poet who began his life as an artist at a young age by painting on sidewalks. He left China in 1949 and settled for a six-year period in Paris beginning in 1952, where he became acquainted with Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, and Pierre Alechinsky who were members of the European avant-garde group called CoBrA (coined from the cities Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam). Ting arrived in New York in 1958 at the height of the Abstract Expressionist period. While in New York he became closely associated with artists such as Sam Francis and Joan Mitchell. Influences of American action painting, Arte Informale and the CoBrA group can be seen in Ting’s works, which are a unique blend of bright colors infused by an appreciation for the natural world. Vivid colors became a signature style of Ting’s, which he would continue to use in the backgrounds of his figurative paintings. The explosive composition and colors are similar to Willem de Kooning’s style. Ting’s works are in major museums worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern. Watercolor on paper, signed with artist’s seal or chop mark left center, mounted and housed under glass in a simple wooden ebonized frame. Includes several handwritten letters, envelopes, a postcard, and photograph, featuring correspondence with one woman in New York in the 1980’s. In one letter, Ting includes a small drawing of flowers. His flowing handwriting reflects his carefree artistic style, and his bold return address stamp appears on some of the envelopes, as well as a few color stamps with examples of his work on the manila envelope. The watercolor was given to the recipient of the letters and correspondence as a gift. A great collection of ephemera from a world renowned artist. Dimensions: The watercolor measures 5 ⅞ in H x 8 in W,actual; 12.75 in H x 15.75 in W x ⅝ in D, framed.

In 1953, he had a Fulbright grant to paint in Italy, and from 1956 to 1959, he worked with Josef Albers, geometric abstractionist, at Yale University where he earned both his BFA and MFA. This construction consists of antique lithographs laid on board, including a shooting target sheet, and metal jacks, all presented on an antique celestial map...
