About

Large-scale graphite still life drawing by American Modernist master Marsden Hartley, who was among the finest of America’s first generation of modern artists. From modest origins in Maine, he grew to become perhaps the most cosmopolitan painter of his era. Before 1910, Alfred Stieglitz had exhibited his work. Hartley met Gertrude and Leo Stein in Paris in 1912 and became part of their circle of important European and American artists, and in 1913 his work was included in the seminal international Armory Show in New York. By 1920, he had already exhibited his work in New York, Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Breslau, Bermuda and New Mexico. Unbroken provenance back to the artist, Marsden Hartley Estate no. 437. This drawing was included in an exhibition in New York and in Greenville, South Carolina at the Greenville County Museum of art, entitled Arlie Kuntz, Marsden Hartley and American Modernism from 2014-2015. It is included and illustrated in the accompanying catalogue by Townsend Ludington and John Driscoll, Charles Philip Kuntz, Marsden Hartley: Arising and Converging in Aix, Greenville, SC: Greenville County Museum of Arts, 2014, pp. 82 and 99, full page illustration. Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) STILL LIFE, FRUIT AND GOBLET, c. 1927 Graphite on paper, 19 ¼ x 24 ½ inches unframed, 30 3/4 x 36 inches framed
