Watercolor and ink is applied in multiple layers creating plays on color from deep magenta to burgundy and soft notes of various shades of purple creating a painterly approach to representational painting of plant life. Her representation of botanical imagery hints at abstraction creating puddles of color that drip and form into others, growing and shifting as they fill the page.
Kohn’s work hangs wonderfully as sets, building triptychs and diptychs for a beautiful salon style wall. They are perfect accents to add to any home.
Artist Statement:
I create deeply layered landscapes that explore patterns of growth and decay in nature. My paintings investigate a shifting of energy, finding light from darkness, control from chaos, and balance from the unbalanced. I am influenced by cycles of deterioration, devastation, and renewal. I attempt to find beauty in this process by focusing on patterns and amplifying them. Each piece is a meditation on light, space, and time.
My process involves working with multiple layers of watercolor and ink. The transparency of this medium allows me to play with different color overlays and underlays, revealing what lies beneath. The layered history is integral to the final piece.

Rachel Kohn is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, N.Y. She received her M.F.A. from Hunter College in painting, and her B.A. from Skidmore College in Art and Mathematics. She has exhibited her work widely in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Galleries include Lake George Arts Project, N.Y., Denise Bibro Fine Art, NY, Tarryn Teresa Gallery, CA, and G.V. Art, London.
