About the Item

"Butterfly" is one of a series of paintings on paper of the front and the back of a single quilt. About the genesis of this series, Sedrick Huckaby said, "I was thinking about the back and the front of a quilt being shown at the same time. So a way of seeing the back and front is to place them side by side, and when you do that, you have these shapes that are like mirrored reflections, but not. The mirrored image of the larger shapes sort of looks like a butterfly because they are symmetrical, but not, because the two sides are different. In the end the unity and variety of the pieces make them interesting." Sedrick Huckaby’s focus on the quilt as metaphor for his faith, his family, and his heritage comes to life in works such as this. Huckaby sees the infinite potential of the quilt to communicate themes such as love and reconciliation to the graffiti generation; a dialogue to bridge the gap between old people and young people. African-American quilts from the last century, handed down as family heirlooms, serve as his subject. For Huckaby, these quilts were the African-American women’s form of jazz. Women would sit together making quilts, creating rhythm in their patterns and improvising as needed. They created harmony in the quilt. The quilts became more than blankets - they were about community and creativity. Huckaby focuses on the subject of the quilt, expounding on its metaphor for family, faith, and heritage. In both his quilt paintings and portraits, Huckaby venerates the ordinary and seeks to glorify everyday people and tell their stories. Sedrick Huckaby is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award. After earning a BFA at Boston University and an MFA from Yale University in 1999, he traveled in Europe before returning to his hometown of Fort Worth. Huckaby’s work is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, NC; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Tyler Museum of Art; the Minneapolis Institute of Art and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. His work has been exhibited most recently at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth. Multiple exhibition catalogues have been published on his work. Huckaby is Assistant Professor of Painting at the University of Texas at Arlington.
