Gadi Fraiman
Large Abstract Angels / Butterflies Israeli Contemporary Bronze Enamel Sculpture

About the Item

Gadi Fraiman (Israel, 1958-) A figural metal sculpture depicting a rope with ascending angelic butterfly like creatures with a human or angel body and fluttering wings. This large metal sculpture is finished with a green and burgundy patina and is signed "G. Fraiman". Gadi Fraiman, Hebrew: גדי פריימן born November 25, 1958 is an Israeli sculptor who works mainly with bronze and stone. Fraiman is known for creating artworks that embody movement through the use of flowing lines. His work exhibits in galleries, exhibitions and public spaces around the globe. Fraiman was born in Łódź, Poland to Itzhak a holocaust survivor and Anna. When Fraiman was eight years old, the family immigrated to Israel. Fraiman’s interest in making things with his hands began at a young age. At the age of 24, Fraiman became a member of Kibbutz Mishmar David. Thereupon he married Flora. He worked as a vineyard farmer growing grapes for wine. In 1982, Fraiman began making bronze and stone works in a deserted warehouse in the kibbutz. In 1995, he built a larger studio at a top of the hill on the outskirts of the kibbutz: an ancient building, surrounded by a garden and in the midst of nature, he opened a gallery there for display of his works. In 2002 Fraiman founded a school for sculpting in bronze and stone in his studio where he hosts sculpting classes to people of all ages and levels of experience. He is a well known Israeli contemporary artist he has been sold in gallery shows with Dudu David Gerstein, Calman Shemi, Isaac Maimon, Isaac Kahn, David Schluss, Niso Maman and Ron Agam. Fraiman is known for the energetic, flowing lines in his sculptures that create a sense of movement. Often the works reflect a sense of melody, as well as reflecting a long, enduring process. Fraiman’s main ethos is the uncompromising nature of his material choice and work process. Fraiman mainly works in three types of materials: stone, bronze and colored enameled bronze. Each type of medium requires a different work process as well as its own way of thinking. Fraiman expanded to working in bronze after several years of sculpting in stone and the works come to life by adding material into three-dimensional space. According to its subject matter and form, Fraiman chooses to paint some of his bronze sculptures. His subject matter is often personal, reflecting on timeless issues of beauty, aesthetics and human nature, rather than commenting on current issues of the outside world. The artist Gadi Fraiman spent much of his life as a farmer working in the foothills of Jerusalem. Born in Poland to Holocaust survivors, he came to Israel with his family at eight years old. As a child, Fraiman has said, he turned to art as a form of daydreaming, drawing scenes from his imagination, to escape the inherited trauma of his family’s experience. Of meager financial means, in his early 20s, Fraiman began working as a farmer at Kibbutz Mishmar David, a collective commune, learning patience and reverence for nature. Despite his knack for farming, Fraiman desired a more expressive outlet and after finding rusty tools in a warehouse on the Kibbutz, Fraiman began to sculpt stones in the evenings and in his free time. This continued for years, with the artist developing his knowledge and expanding his skills to lost wax casting, until, at the age of 40, Fraiman committed himself entirely to his art. Now in his 60s, Fraiman is still busy making his lyrical artworks, and recently began a “Masks” series that hints and the history of the stage. Gadi sculpts in Stone and Bronze.
