With clear inspiration from natural botanicals and oceanic life, artist Jenny Brown combines found imagery and her own mark making to create delicate yet bold designs. In this work a shell sits against a bright teal background, teeming with life: purple and pink flowers, lush green foliage, and a peacock feather adorn the crustacean home, as if growing directly from its surface. The work is further unified with pink dots painted about, with fine white lines emerging like tentacles or perhaps additional branches and leaves.

Artist Commentary:
Sea Spine is a unique and fantastic flowering shell, adorned with a peacock feather, lilacs, and the whispers of ocean hair. Inspired by stories of hidden oceans on the distant planets and the joy of discovery, this work was created with pen, ink, acrylic paint, & collage.
About the Artist:
Jenny Brown is a visual artist living and working in Providence, Rhode Island, whose primary mediums are drawing, collage, and works on paper. Her work brings to life a mythical world of sea creatures and celestial beings, realized through her love of paper ephemera. Jenny studied art at Bennington College and received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2005. "Chaos and Control Theory" Series is about depth and space. It’s about information overload, and what information looks like when you take out a meaning. I create lots of layers, using found materials and printed materials. I do an abstract expressionism painting on a surface first before I apply the printed and found materials. And then I begin to organize the surface, ultimately thinking about balance and flow and how the piece is going to contribute to the space it is going to be hanging in.

Artists may paint or embroider on fabric to create layers of texture and color to evoke a specific feeling. They can also transfer photos onto fabric for innovative ways to display visuals.
Resin-based art has clean, sharp lines and a definitive shape. Resin is a liquid that hardens to a high-gloss surface and is used to seal wood, counters and floors. Resin can also seal artwork, and many artists tint it using pigment powder, ink, spray paint and other vivid materials. If water is added, the resin will turn milky instead of being completely transparent. It’s common for artists working in mixed media to use resin on nontraditional surfaces like glass, wood, metal and stone. This creates a shine that’s perfect to brighten a dull space in the home or office.
