About the Item

Materials: acrylic painted paper on Birch panel Non-objective artist Aimée Farnet Siegel works with color and line through the medium of hand-painted and manipulated paper. Her works inhabit space outside the two-dimensional plane of paint on canvas and have a depth beyond collage and are closer in nature to assemblage. Treating refined pulp much as a ceramicist would clay or a designer would bolts of fabric, Siegel renders, rents, and reassembles the tactile medium in creating two- and three-dimensional works. Working with 16-foot rolls of paper and miscellaneous fragments and glue, the results range from asymmetrical hangings to sculptural, free-standing figures. Born in New Orleans in 1963, Siegel received her BFA from Louisiana State University and later studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. She developed a career as a graphic designer and incorporated as Aimée Farnet Design Group in 1985. Siegel began creating art in 2005. She has shown at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the New Orleans Art Center, and the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). She has since exhibited in solo shows at Barristers Gallery, New Orleans, and in group exhibitions with Blue Spiral Gallery, Asheville, NC and, in New Orleans, Second Story Gallery and Degas Gallery. In 2019, she will present an independent site-specific installation in conversation with works in the international group show, Hinge Picture, Memory Images, at The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans. Also in 2019, Siegel will have her works exhibited for the first time in a one-person show at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, New Orleans, and at Spalding Nix Fine Art, Atlanta. Siegel teaches at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and is an independent curator. She has two grown children and works and lives in New Orleans with her husband. Connections and the space between are themes in my work. The tension that is created when object are close yet do not touch intrigues me. As I push tension in separation, I’m also searching for connections. In my work, lines are like characters in a play, weaving through the story, my composition. Paper is my medium. I strive to be sensitive to it's authenticity, allowing it to become what it wants to be.

  • Pyre VII, india ink charred plywood abstract patterns earth tones created w fire
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Pyre VII 2017 India ink and acrylic paint on charred birch plywood 32" x 24" x 1.25" Pyre VII is part of a series of charred panels Watson completed in 2017 at the Arts, Letters and Numbers Residency in Averill Park, NY. The pieces incorporate local materials, rice, and fire to create charred photographic images on plywood that explore themes related to being, substance and imperceptibility. The imagery references the practice of cremation on a funerary pyre in which the corpse is prepared and burned over a construction of combustible materials. Within the work, rather than destroying the body, the fire produces an afterimage that remains indefinitely. Each day Watson would scavenge the site collecting natural objects, such as sticks, small rocks, and other detritus. He laid these objects on the surface of the plywood with raw rice. The surface was then charred using a propane torch. After the objects and rice were removed an image of them remained, like a photogram. In some panels, He incorporated a homemade black rice ink or various paints to tint the surface before and after burning. Rice is a recurring theme in Watson’s work. It alludes to an uncontained body in the process of decay, returning to the earth to become a source of sustenance for new life. It also imagines the soul extending beyond its fleshly container. The act of burning attempts to capture the space between life, death, and rebirth— freezing it in a state of transformation. The sticks, stones, and rice become remnants of life and markers of space and time. They are more than mere grains and detritus. They become the body as a trace of what was and a reflection of what will be. Michael Watson...
