About

Diaz is no stranger to artwork that challenges patriotism, and "American Flag" is one of his most vividly political pieces to date. He uses collage to reconceptualize the oversaturated image of the stars and stripes; with wobbly, textured lettering creating red stripes between uneven white lines and replacing fifty stars with fifty skull-and-crossbones, Diaz is subverting the very foundation of America and its historic nationalism. Indeed, the red stripes spell out words such as "racism," "imperialism," and "blatant lies" to stir outrage in his audience. Unafraid of militant artwork, Diaz uses familiar subway lettering to remind his viewer that to deconstruct contemporary political turmoil, we must return to the most fundamental and ingrained corners of daily life. Al Diaz (SAMO) is a New York legend. His work gravitates towards words and imagery, using collage, mixed media, 'wet paint' signs, paint, and various other mediums and glazes. His SAMO tag is famous throughout the city as it was once a collaboration with him and his friend from adolescence, Jean-Michel Basquiat. Own a piece of New York history.
