About the Item
Abstract ceramic tile painting of white birds against a light oak brown background and blue and white mosaic design
18 x 18 inches
Earthenware, ceramic glazes on panel
This unique hanging ceramic tile was crafted by Saratoga, NY-based artist Anne Francey. The composition combines abstracted white birds and geometric patterns in an earthly combination of sienna brown and moss green with accents of white and blue mosaic design. A slightly rough surface texture reinforces the handmade quality of the piece, yet the overall gloss from ceramic glazes ensures a sense of elegance. The ceramic work on panel hovers just slightly off of the wall due to a small mount on back.
About the Birds and Geometry series:
Anne Francey writes, 'The tile-like ceramic pieces are to be hung on a wall like paintings. The relationship between geometric patterns and various configurations reflects on our need to find meaning in the events that shape our lives. But while geometric designs inevitably incorporate the unpredictable nature of the hand and fire that modeled it, more organic shapes strive to find a semblance of order.'
About the artist:
Anne Francey’s observation of the natural world has always been the point of departure in her clay work, evolving into a constant oscillation between representation and abstraction, organic shapes and geometric order, what's being shown and what's being hidden. Whether starting from a flower, a twig, an insect or a moss. Francey simplifies and flattens their shapes, blurring their visual identity in order to reveal a hidden meaning. Of her work, the artist states, “Could these abstracted forms of insects and plants, hardened for ever in the fired clay, become imprints of the past one day, like fossils of a bygone era?” Anne Francey currently resides in Saratoga Springs, New York.

- Chasmanthium Insignias: Abstract Encaustic Painting with Green, Earth TonesBy Allyson LevyLocated in Hudson, NYAbstract encaustic painting with a green, earth toned palette. Made with natural plant material (Northern Sea Oats) "Chasmanthium Insignias I" made by Allyson Levy in 2021 encaustic and plant material on wood panel, 24 x 24 x 1 inches Lightweight, hangs with one d-ring, Signed, verso This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with Northern Sea Oats and green encaustic, sealed with a layer of neutral wax on a wood panel. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring. About the artist and her work: After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. A fascination with earth’s bounty is expressed with her works in encaustic. Assorted organic material such as leaves, seeds, branches, insect wings...Category
