About

What lies at the root of Schultze's great abstraction is Surrealist nature, mainly the woods, the roots, the undergrowth. Without being depictive at all, Schultze refers in his images to the structural properties of woodland. Lines and narrow stripes, spots and specks intertwine, sometimes creating an all-over structure, sometimes we find a central figure contrasting against a finely wrought and detailed background (the central figure possessing the same qualities), sometimes the central figure dominates the image without an explicit background. Bernard Schultze (31 May 1915 in Schneidemühl, now Piła, Poland – 14 April 2005 in Cologne) was a Polish, German abstract painter who co-founded the Quadriga group of artists (which included such artists as Otto Greis Karl Otto Götz, and Heinz Kreutz. Characterized by their gestural abstraction). He married another painter, Ursula Bluhm. Later he joined 'Zen 49', a group of artists who were inspired by Zen Buddhism. In 1956 Schultze began to build up the surface of his paintings to high relief. These led to the creation of his first 'Migofs' in 1961; free-standing works which include animal, plant and human imagery and which evoke the cycle of birth and decay. Art Movement: Art Informel, similar to the art brut of Jean Dubuffet)Haute Pâte (Matter Painting) known for painting, printmaking, sculpture and collage. His unmistakable works, with their often unusual formal inventions, were and are represented in exhibitions and museum collections in Germany and abroad. The Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf is showing Bernard Schultze (1915–2005): Works from the Kemp Collection until August 30, 2015. The Jean Hans Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck will be presenting Ein heller Hauch, ein funkelnder Wind: Bernard Schultze zum 100. Geburtstag ( A Gentle Breeze, a Scintillating Wind) from June 19, 2015 to May 1, 2016. Schultze's art collection produced before 1945 was destroyed during an air raid on Berlin in 1945. Collected by major museums Tate in London, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) NY and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Berhard Schulze belonged to the last great names and precursors of German postwar-abstraction.
