About the Item

Paper paint charcoal collage Whether the subject matter is figuration or nature, Audrey Anastasi approaches all her subjects directly and unabashedly. In this work on paper, she combines her masterful drawing skills with playful whimsey and somber introspection on the subject of passing time. “Considering myself primarily a feminist artist, painting other women, most of my work focuses on the human face, figures, animals and nature. I prefer direct observation, and I work very rapidly. And, as with all my paintings since 1990, in my quest to discover and reveal what is most essential, these works are painted almost exclusively with my non-dominant left hand.” These collages were created first in the presence of a live model, working quickly, in charcoal and pastel, and again, later, alone in the studio, furiously tearing and pasting images from magazines, various language newspapers, print publications, and previous drawings. As a natural progression of Ms.Anastasi's older work, this new iteration of charcoal and pastel portraits of women from life employ overlaid pieces of torn newspaper, magazines, and previous drawings to create complex and emotionally intense figures. Within some of these portraits there are ripped road maps, providing equal presence to the figures each with their own level of dimensionality. The maps serve to pose questions, such as, “Where am I?, Where does this road lead”? Offering answers, “I am central to the narrative. I constructed the environment around me”. Audrey Anastasi is a feminist artist. Her practice is rooted in painting other women, the human face, and figure through direct observation. Through this technique, Anastasi examines perception and the construction of self-image. Audrey was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, and taught figure drawing, portfolio development, and anatomy for artists at Parsons School of Design for approximately 10 years. Audrey has been featured in Smart Money Magazine, the Lenny Lopate Show (aka: New York and Company) on National Public Radio, the New York Times, New York Daily News, amNY, Pratt Folio, Jewish Week, the arts & entertainment supplements of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, the Brooklyn Fine Arts magazine, OntheIssuesMagazine and the New York Observer. Audrey lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Giancarlo T. Roma writes: As a medium, collages are defined by the idea of fragmentation -- disparate elements pasted together to form a new whole. In her latest series, Collage, Audrey Anastasi uses this idea to convey the complexity of our inner lives -- that we are not one thing, even to ourselves. Compositionally, each piece contains two fundamental elements -- a woman, drawn in charcoal, usually in the center of the frame, and bits of media pasted in front of, behind, and around each subject. The women assume a variety of poses -- some are vulnerable, shoulders open, glaring at the viewer; others are guarded, arms crossed, contorting their body to the side; many are lost in thought, staring off into some unknown distance, seemingly unaware of our gaze. No matter their disposition, though, the women of Collage all appear deep in introspection, and we see them as if we are walking in on them in private moments. They are not just in their own heads, but in the closets, attics, and hiding places of their minds, alternatively focused and wistful in their contemplation. The other media -- bits of writing, scraps from magazines, fragments of other paintings -- give us clues as to what might be giving them pause, or at least the shape it is taking. Indeed, the most recurring image of the series is that of a map, usually serving as the background to the subjects -- taken together, the images that populate their surroundings function as a kind of map of their inner life. In “Red Birch,” birch trees -- a previous series of Anastasi’s and another theme that repeats in this one -- create a thicket in front of a woman’s pensive face, as other bits of filigree flicker on the other side, creating a sort of visual static. Toned in sepia like an old, old photograph, the work has the feeling of revisiting an old memory that’s been obfuscated by the passing of time. Eyelids droopy with reverie, the woman at the center of “Cowgirl” leans her head down towards a hillside pine forest traversed by two horses, as if she’s listening to the sounds of her own projection, perhaps of where she’d rather be. We get the sense we are glimpsing into her own imagination -- a mind-made diorama. Bright stars and neon galaxies swirl around a woman in “Celestial Night” seeping into parts of her arm, head, and chest. But her body also displays a much more local map -- the New York City subway system, with its own colored lines traversing her body like veins. Space, quite literally, is collapsed in her being. She is here and everywhere at the same time. Aren’t we all.

-ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. • Unruly Muse - Allegorical Drawing of the Artist in The Studio with Models
    By David Becker
    Located in Chicago, IL
David Becker b. 1937 David H. Becker, painter, printmaker and educator, was born on August 16, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He studied at the Milwaukee State Teachers College, the Layton School of Art between 1956 and 1958, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he enrolled in the science curriculum. After a chance meeting with Warrington Colescott, department chair of the art department, Becker decided on a career in art and received his BFA degree in 1961. After graduation he served for two years in the US Army and then entered a graduate studies program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned his MFA in 1965. ------- Becker moved to Detroit after receiving his degree and joined the faculty at Wayne State University where he taught life drawing. In 1985 he left Detroit to join the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and he retired from teaching in 2006. His first solo exhibition was mounted in 1968. About 1970 Becker turned most of his attention towards printmaking as he could not paint and create prints during the same period of time and was pulled toward printmaking. He stated that he enjoys “putting images together in an unpredictable fashion.” Becker worked slowly and an etching plate could take up to two years to complete and he ultimately only produced thirteen prints. His etchings were included in the Twenty-fourth National Exhibition of Prints at the Library of Congress in 1975; the Third American Biennial of Graphic Arts at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Cali, Columbia in 1976, winning the gold medal; and Brooklyn Museum National Print Exhibition. His work was included in the Ninth British International Print Biennale in Bradford, England in 1986; the 162nd and 165th Annual at the National Academy of Design in 1987 and 1990. Becker was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1983 and elevated to full Academician in 1991. He received a Visual Artists Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts which helped him transition back into painting. He also received the University of Wisconsin Chancellor’s Faculty Development Award in the Creative Arts in 1996 and 1999. He is a member of and exhibited with the Boston Printmakers, Society of American Graphic Artists, and the Philadelphia Print Club. In the late 1990's and early aughts, Becker returned to painting and drawing full time. David H. Becker is represented in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
