About the Item

Combining elements of paper collage, tape/ink transfer, deconstructed-found-photography, chance, and layering; I attempt to mimic the elements of painting. I work on canvas for the material associations of painting it evokes, and the history of painting it poses. My painting “ground” is layered and collaged paper. The deconstructed layers of ink from consumer catalogues become the “paint” and line drawing assemblage. The paintings’ finished surfaces are layers of clear tape functioning as a substitute for high gloss varnish, a kind of “contemporary glaze.” I use tape and transfer in a non-traditional way to isolate fragments of found ink into abstract information that I can manipulate and reconfigure freely. I layer tape and ink piece by piece, changing the way I can utilize the tape to make hard edges, fragmented strokes, and nuanced color fields. This is where my process relates more to painting rather than cut-and-paste collage. Pages in catalogues can been seen more as pallets of color, shape, and form, rather than just images of objects chosen for their objective qualities and direct associations with each other. While working in process I’m deciding how much variation can be disrupted by freeing ink from the surface of the found pages. I allow chance to occur while “pulling” ink from the pages, jumping around the pages, and allowing random associations to occur while placing the tiny components onto the canvases. Deconstructing found objects from photographs allows me to decide whether I can reconstruct fragments into abstraction or distort the image and place it back together in a semi-representational state. Combining these processes—collage, transfer, and line drawing— tricks the eye into seeing painterly effects while subverting the traditional classifications of both of painting and collage. Ephemeral by nature, the tape, the ink, the catalogues, I’ve used in the series remain in a state of indeterminate fluctuation, indicative of modern material, physical changes associated with time and light and societal value placed on objects by humans.
