About the Item

Dorothy Simpson Krause’ “Faraway” is a 34.5 x 26.5 inch emulsion transfer to stone paper primarily in inky blacks and dark earthy browns, with a central area of focus in brilliant white highlighted in pink. A broad uneven stone stairway leads up past ancient dwellings, through a dark tunnel toward a lighted opening. This piece is made of two superimposed images: the first is of ancient stone steps, and the second is of leaves floating on the surface of a pool of water with the reflection of overhanging branches. The abraded edges of the transferred image recall at once rippling water and ancient documents. This work is presented floated in a natural maple frame. Part of Krause’s body of work entitled “Visions’, here she highlights the mystery of architectural space and light: doorways, windows, and hallways from which light either shines or recedes into blackness. Ethereal and menacing, her work conveys the poetry of space and light, alluding to spiritual transitions, and ultimately, life and death. Taking inspiration from Coleridge’s poem “Kubla Khan,” beauty is underscored with violence, potential and real. These abandoned passages appear to be submerged below the reflective surface of water like the shifting memory of dreams, but also a statement about the impending disappearance of civilization as we know it, through the effects of global warming. Krause is a painter, collage artist and printmaker who incorporates digital mixed media into her art. She is deeply inspired by nature, travel, and innovative art making processes. Her work is exhibited regularly in galleries and museums and featured in numerous current periodicals and books. Krause is Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art where she founded the Computer Arts Center and a member of Digital Atelier®, an artists collaborative. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia and a consultant for manufacturers and distributors of products which may be used by fine artists. Emulsion transfers have the characteristic skin-like quality and rippled edges of the original Polaroid emulsion. The process of creating an emulsion transfer print is identical to creating a transfer print except that the print is allowed to dry overnight then the surface of the imaged film is covered with a solution designed to dissolve the coating on the film and encapsulate the ink in a skin similar to a sheer plastic wrap. When the film is placed on the surface, which may be porous or non-porous, the transferred print, encapsulated in ink jet receiver, sits on the surface and may be stretched, of the edges abraded. This piece is numbered one of an edition varie of six. An edition varie is a kind of limited edition print or transfer, which allows for minor differences in between the editions due to the hand made nature of the process.
