About the Item
'Sailors in the Port of Nice', mixed media - gouache, pastel and oil on paper, by Alfred Salvignol (circa 1950s). The Port of Nice is one of the key hubs of Nice and, in fact, of the entire French Riviera, standing out as one of the main harbours for the boats which sail across the Mediterranean Sea. It accommodates both the ships operated by ferry companies and the private yachts of visitors who come to Nice by sea. The artist here depicts a group of crusty sailors watching the approach of a sailboat towards the docking quay. Much skill is required to dock a sailboat without benefit of an engine. Some drag a stern anchor to slow the boat, one can 'feather' the tiller as well to make turns and slow. Or, just dropping the sail at the right moment while maintaining steerage is the most elegant but perhaps also the most difficult approach to make. Preparation and forethought are required before making these manoeuvres - plenty of fenders on both sides are needed as insurance! This painting is in fair-to-good condition, newly framed and glazed and is signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner. The signature is scratched as is the lowest left hand side of the artwork. However, that minor blemish visually blends with the style of the artist and does not affect the overall impression of the piece. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the artwork may be provided.
About the Artist: Alfred Salvignol (1903-1983) was a painter from Nice, France. He was trained at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice, where he studied engraving and lithography. He was influenced by the painters of the School of Nice, such as Yves Klein, Arman and César. In the 1950s, Salvignol created colourful expressionist paintings on mixed media of paper and canvas. In particular, he produced a series of portraits of sailors in the port of Nice, which are highly prized by collectors today. Salvignol was also active in the Réalité Cobra art movement, founded in 1950, and in the Abstract Art movement, founded in 1952. These movements were characterised by an experimental approach to artistic creation, which opposed academic conventions.
He has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums in France and abroad, notably at the Galerie Forni in Paris, at the Galerie 13 in Nice and at the Krugier Gallery in New York. Salvignol is considered one of the most important artists of the School of Nice. His work is often associated with the Abstract Expressionism movement, although he also explored other styles and techniques during his career.

- Lunch at Chez LouisBy Roland DubucLocated in London, GB'Lunch at Chez Louis', oil on canvas, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s). The outdoor terrace at restaurants and cafés in France goes back centuries as they have always been a gathering place for intellectuals to meet and debate philosophical issues; for the Avant Garde set to display their works; for artists to compare and exchange ideas and for writers to drown their sorrows over their artistic anguish or melancholy. Even the freedom fighters of the French Revolution and later the French Resistance would meet in cafés to plot their course. Regular people of course also enjoy these venues. A very delightful feature of these French institutions is that there is always room for quiet book readers, romantic couples, business meetings and lively groups of friends sharing a bottle of wine. The artist Dubuc captures a slice of this lovely aspect of French culture in this smile-inducing depiction painted in vivid oils. With a background of greenery, the patrons enjoy the outdoors protected from the intense sun by the table's parasols. Ah, the life. The artwork is in good vintage condition, is framed and signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...Category
