About the Item
This is a mixed media collage piece by Eleanor Aldrich. Made as a part of her 2017 "Thick Mag" series, it features cut-outs from magazines, caulking, and paper transfers. A nebulous, biomorphic purple structure in the upper center of the collage first catches the eye of the of the viewer, and we notice a slender hand below it, holding a pole. As we look closer at the collage, we realize that each magazine cutout consists of several layers of paper. The artist has built up layers of photos and cut away the sides at an angle, giving the piece a topographic contour map look to create depth and shadow.
