"Pink Nicola" by Gary Hume is an abstracted portrait, boldly painted in bright pink enamel paint on a metal, aluminum panel. The work does not need to be framed. The slender and elegant pink form is reminiscent of a woman's face, framed by long hair on either side, the only shape recognizable being her eyebrow and eye hollows on her face. The form extends upward on the shiny surface of the aluminum, a vivid stroke of movement. Gary Hume is a British artist whose work is usually associated with the Young British Artists movement which began in the late 1980s. His highly colorful work is characterized by sleek surfaces, pared-back shapes, and references to found imagery.
