‘Royal Rock’, Ha Manh Thang Large Acrylic on Handmade Silk Paper Painting

2008

About

‘Royal Rock’ is a large acrylic on handmade silk paper figurative painting created by Vietnamese artist Ha Manh Thang in 2008. Featuring a bold palette made of a variety of colors such as orange, red, green and blue, the painting is a reflection of today’s social life in Vietnam. Combining acrylic on woven silk paper symbolizing both tradition and modernity, Ha Manh Thang depicts a group of musicians performing rock music. This mix between tradition and modernity is not limited to the medium used, as the characters’ clothes vary from jeans and jackets to the traditional silk áo dài worn by the woman on the left. The electric guitar on the bottom right, the iPhone, the beer and liquor bottles are in perfect contrast with the traditional musical instruments such as the đàn tỳ bà lute and the cello, as well as the carved stone guardian lion Sư tử đá, depicted in the bottom left. Combined with a repetitious evocation of French high-end perfumes such as Chanel, Givenchy or Dior, the result is a personal and thoughtful interpretation of Vietnam’s vibrant life. With its striking colors, large proportions and passionate scene, this unframed acrylic on silk paper figurative painting will bring an undeniable sense of energy to any room. Born in Vietnam in 1980, Ha Manh Thang is one of the fresh faces of Vietnamese art who uses his work to chronicle the changing country around him. Much of his work is inspired by the evolution of his country after Doi Moi, the economic liberating of the nation which led to an expanded demand for western goods as well as a revival of manufacturing as a new driver of employment in a country devastated by decades of war in the mid to late 20th century. Having graduated from Hanoi University of Fine in 2004, Ha Manh works primarily in acrylic on woven silk paper. His style ranges from figurative to abstract with subjects from families to faces to pure abstraction. He sometimes utilizes an impressionist style that brings to mind Monet, with blurred lines and monochromatic hues providing only haunting suggestions of the given subjects, which are often large hulking structures from Vietnam’s past. In his own words: “For me art is a way to define my own life in a different way. It is like a circle of time, memory and history. I am interested in how meaning is ascribed to images especially historically and culturally significant images. My works usually weave images from my own cultural history and pop culture with the social exigencies I find in contemporary life..." Ha Manh Thang has seen his work displayed in museums and galleries around the world, from Singapore to Hungary to the United States and of course Vietnam. He was also profiled in Painting Today in 2009 in an issue that also featured artists such as Gerhard Richter, Neo Rauch and Peter Doig. His paintings belong to the Hanoi Fine Arts Museum, Singapore Art Museum's collection and substantial private collections worldwide including the Bodner collection in Belgium Hungary. Thang has had a solo exhibition at the Ernst & Young Asian Outreach program in Singapore and has exhibited at numerous shows including The Armory Show in NY and Art Asia Miami He now lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam.
