Artist Comments
This piece was inspired by the phrase New York State of Mind. It is a surreal scene that intends to embrace the contrast between rural upstate New York and New York City, one of the largest cities in the world. In this piece, Billy Joel stands in the pose of the Statue of Liberty. With his right hand he hails a taxi cab, and in his left arm he holds a box of the packing material ;wood wool.; This is also known as ;excelsior; which is the state motto of New York, and is the expression to which the hot air balloon and the title of this painting refer. The apple is symbolic of both the state and the city, being the state fruit and the Big Apple. In the background the number of cows in curiously organized rows represents the year 1788 when New York officially became a state. This painting was done in oil on top of acrylic on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.
About the Artist
Michael Wedge works in a variety of mediums: sculpture, painting, mixed media and more. He oftentimes starts with a mental image and creates digital collages, which become the basis for his paintings. A lot of his work references themes from his personal life, such as the experience of living in a city versus in the countryside. If his art seems mysterious, it;s because he enjoys making complex works. I am attracted to images or moments that seem to have something subtle or hidden under the surface, he explains. When he;s not making art, he teaches it at an elementary school.

There are so many things in this world that do not match yet coexist. Hate and love, good and evil, joy and sorrow. Despite this, we constantly pursue perfect peace, love, and happiness. My work places two objects that cannot be together in one space, projecting the imbalances and irregularities of this world, and at the same time, depicting harmony, peace and quiet. This piece was made by layering Korean mulberry paper on a wooden panel and painting with watercolor.About the Artist
Heejin has been been drawing for as long as she can remember. She grew up with a serious illness and spent much of her childhood in the hospital. Drawing served as an outlet for her, bringing her peace and distraction. Heejin says there was no doubt as she grew up that she wanted to be an artist.
