About the Item

"Barrette, Blue" is 1 of 2 blue monoprints; Part of a series of six: 2 grey, 2 blue, 2 white. Mediums used are acrylic on paper mounted on canvas; hand-cut stencils (16). Robert R. Zakanitch is an internationally known and highly respected painter who was one of the founders of the Pattern and Decoration movement. Born in 1935, he currently lives in New York, but lived for a time in Miami and was strongly influenced by the light and atmosphere of this tropical city. His most recent solo exhibition was at the Hudson River Museum in 2017. In the late 1960s, he began experimenting with Color Field painting in an abstract style, which gradually incorporated decorative imagery inspired by repeat patterns in textiles, wallpaper and vintage linoleum patterns. One of his first shows in Manhattan was at the legendary Robert Miller Gallery (who at the time also represented Louise Bourgeois and Robert Mapplethorpe) and his work was a sensation with its gorgeous, intoxicating painterly surfaces that immediately attracted collectors such as Jane Holzer, as well as important museum curators. The following year (1967), Zakanitch was selected to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial, followed by several group shows at the museum over the next three years, with another Biennial invitation in 1981. He continued to exhibit his work at prestigious galleries such as Galerie Daniel Templon, Paris, James Mayor, London, Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich, and Sidney Janis, Hirschl & Adler and Nancy Hoffman Gallery, New York City. He has been included in numerous museum surveys, including the Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum. In 1995, the artist received a highly coveted Guggenheim Fellowship. Recent commissions include the Miami Cultural Center, Cesar Pelli & Associates, Johnson & Johnson and the Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas. His work has been reviewed by some of the top art critics in America, including Carter Ratcliff (Art in America), John Perreault (ARTnews), Irving Sandler, Harper Collier and Arthur Danto (The Nation), among others. His work is in numerous private and public collections, including Chase Manhattan Bank, Denver Art Museum, Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Milwaukee Art Museum, Musée de Strasbourg, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum and the Albright-Knox Museum, among many others. Robert R. Zakanitch commemorates beauty and texture in nature with striking color schemes and structures that integrate floral motifs in a painterly style. His most recent work continues to integrate highly textured, built up canvases, with sculptural paste as a base of support, that celebrate the unabashed decorative appeal of nature. According to the artist, “Simply, art should be about beauty!” His nearly boundless accomplishments and extensive critical praise are almost as impressive as the paintings at the heart of his acclaim—lavish works honoring ornamentation simply for the sake of it.
