Sam Gilliam was a pioneering American painter associated with the Washington Color School, celebrated for his radical “drape paintings,” in which he removed the canvas from its stretcher to create immersive, sculptural environments. Alongside contemporaries Alma Thomas, Kenneth Noland, and Morris Louis, Gilliam expanded the language of abstraction through his innovative use of color, material, and form.
