An exceptional micromosaic made by the Vatican Mosaic Workshop after Rembrandt’s celebrated “Man in a Golden Helmet.” Composed of thousands of hand-cut glass tesserae, the work captures the brilliance of Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro with extraordinary precision. The armor glows with metallic depth, and the sitter’s expression retains its quiet intensity which made the original painting so famous.
The Vatican’s Studio del Mosaico is one of the world’s oldest operating workshops, producing mosaics for St. Peter’s Basilica since the Renaissance. A museum-quality example of Italian craftsmanship, this piece unites the genius of Rembrandt with the artistry of the Vatican’s master mosaicists.
The workshop is known to have produced several versions of this famous composition. This example dates to the 20th century with a very similar example having sold at Christie’s New York, October 21, 2025, lot 242.
This work is very heavy (~50 lbs) and is housed in its original frame. It retains its original label from the Vatican Mosaic Workshop on the verso.

Condition: Very good overall condition. A couple small missing tesserae. Original frame with wear and losses commensurate with age. A well-preserved example.
