Abstract Mixed Media

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Taghkanic Creek, May 14 (Modern Abstract Painting on Canvas in Green & Teal)
Located in Hudson, NY
Modern, abstract mixed media painting on canvas in shades of bright teal, turquoise, yellow, and green 40 x 30 inches acrylic, pigmented plaster, wax on canvas Ready to hang as is. Vincent Pomilio is master when it comes to color composition. His abstractions on canvas and wood panel come to life with the most brilliant, yet unexpected color combinations. This mid century modern style abstract painting exemplifies Pomilio celebrated technique of combing vibrant shades of acrylic paint, pigmented plaster, and encaustic. The painting's complexity is made possible through the use of multiple layers of acrylic and plaster. Here the artist begins with an under-layer of teal acrylic paint and then sections off each cross hatching pattern in varying shades of pale yellow, purple, teal, green, and turquoise. Details of gestural splatters of green paint compliments the surface while a final coat of encaustic medium creates an elegant, matte finish. The sides of the abstract geometric painting are painted a dark royal blue, so no framing is necessary. The work is equipped with sturdy wire and is ready to hang. About the artist: Vincent Pomilio specializes in all painting media, canvas, paper and wooden panel. A visit to his studio in the bustling neighborhood of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village offers a unique insight into the artist’s process of his own art making. The right brain dominates here; skillful use of color, shape, line and scale are discovered via intuition, experimentation and quarter turns of the canvas. Pomilio has occupied this bohemian artist’s pad since his school days ended at New York University in 1978 and it is here that he continues to paint to this day. Abstractions of color explosions are harmoniously composed using a combination of acrylic, wax, pigmented plaster and marble dust to build up surfaces and introduce texture. “In the end, the challenge is to know when to stop,” says Pomilio. The result is a stunningly complex and layered composition of color that one could interpret as an aerial landscape view or motifs that resemble woven baskets. When it comes to abstractions, the artist rationalizes, “If you see it, it is there.” At one point in his career, Pomilio felt he was struggling to successfully produce small paintings using the scaled patterns that was common in his work. This prompted a new series - the Big-Little series – which encompasses a study of big images on a small scale. By introducing a degree of ‘minimalism’ he could explore color relationships while magnifying techniques used on larger canvases. The effect this project had on his work flow was one of renewed energy and confidence. He could complete a painting much quicker than with the larger canvases, allowing him to try various solutions and expel creative energy in a focused way. Earlier this year, he completed the 100th 12 x 12 inch painting in the series. This exhibit will feature #100 (as well as #99 and #98), highlighting other selections from this series in addition to select medium and larger paintings on canvas. Vincent Pomilio is represented by the seller based in Hudson, NY. Cutting Corners - Mixed Media Acrylic Painting Abstract Expressionism, 2023
Located in Newport Beach, CA
Elyse Katz (b.1951) is a self-taught American artist residing in Newport Beach, California. Her works are abstractions inspired by the visceral recollection of her personal experiences. As such, she calls her paintings “landscapes of my inner world.” Fittingly, physical landscapes and architectural rhythm also fuel her creativity: urban and rural vistas as viewed from the air, for example, textures and colors of old weathered surfaces and the pattern of cobblestone, to name a few. Katz begins each painting without expectation of outcome, with mark-making and play, layers of acrylic paint and oil pastels and found materials - vintage text...

Moving On (Multi Colored Abstract Geometric Painting on Panel w/ Plaster & Wax)
Located in Hudson, NY
Colorful abstract geometric painting on panel with shades of purple, blue, red, and dark green "Moving On", made by Vincent Pomilio in 2020 20 x 33 x 2 inches acrylic, pigmented plaster, and wax on panel Sides of the canvas are painted, additional framing is optional Excellent condition, Ready to hang as is. Vincent Pomilio is master when it comes to color composition. His abstractions on canvas and panel come to life with the most brilliant, yet unexpected color combinations. The artist begins by applying pigmented plaster, layer by layer, to the wood panel and builds up the composition with geometric shapes in red, orange, blue, purple, yellow and dark green, which are fragmented sporadically across the surface. The beautiful layering is created with different materials such as acrylic, wax crayon, pigment, Kolcaustico Venetian plaster, and marble dust. The artist first sections off segments with tape and then applies the mixed media pigment with a trowel. As it's drying he burnishes and carves into the surface to expose the different layers of color underneath. Refined beeswax is then applied to the top which makes the color more brilliant and acts as a sealant. The sides are cleanly painted so additional framing is not necessary. The artist's signature is located on the back along with wire for easy installation. The piece is in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. About the artist: Vincent Pomilio specializes in all painting media, canvas, paper and wooden panel. A visit to his studio in the bustling neighborhood of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village offers a unique insight into the artist’s process of his own art making. 131 Horizon Lines (Striped Painting on Canvas, Bold Horizontal Bands of Color)
Located in Hudson, NY
131 Horizons by Vincent Pomilio is a contemporary abstract square painting of colorful horizontal stripes. 48 x 48 x 1 inches acrylic, pigmented plaster, wax on canvas Sides of the canvas are painted, no need to frame. Ready to hang as is. Vincent Pomilio is master when it comes to color composition. His abstractions on canvas come to life with the most brilliant, yet unexpected color combinations. This painting, appropriately titled 131 Horizon, is a contemporary spin on the abstract landscape. Bands of bright color in red, orange, blue, purple, yellow and green stretch horizontally across the canvas. The fragmentation might lead one to believe that these are collages, but they are actually many layers of built up medium. The beautiful layering is created with different materials such acrylic, wax crayon, pigment, Kolcaustico Venetian plaster, and marble dust. The artist first sections off segments with tape and then applies the mixed media pigment with a trowel. As it's drying he burnishes and carves into the surface to expose the different layers of color underneath.
