"Alphabet Colors, " Crayon, Colored Pencil, Ink on Canvas by Tom Shelton

2018

About the Item

"Alphabet Colors" is an original mixed media drawing on canvas by Tom Shelton. The artist used crayon, colored pencil, and ink. The artist says: “Looking at cursive writing teaching aids, I looked for, and couldn't find transitions between all the letters in the alphabet. I wanted to see what each transition looked like. I wondered if it was possible to write every transition, from one letter to another, both in front and behind ("ab", "ba"), using each transition only once, in 26 lines. And if there would be a pattern. That would mean, using the letters "a", "b", "c", and "d" that there would have to be the sequences, "acdb", "bdca", "cbad", and "dabc", and no other. Luckily, my wife's father is a mathematics professor, so I put the question to him. A couple hours later he replied with a formula. Not being able to see any pattern from the letters, I assigned each letter a color to get a better view. This picture is the result: the letters on the left, and their colors on the right - both right and left are the same pattern.” 35" x 48" art Tom Shelton graduated with a B.S. in Botany from the University of Cincinnati in 1964 and spent three semesters at the University of Michigan majoring in Forestry from 1964-1965. In 1972 Shelton completed the graduate art program at the Eastern Michigan University in which he received a M.F.A. in painting. Shelton’s artworks are included in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C., The Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, The Allen Museum of Art at Oberlin College in Ohio and the International Headquarters of Fiserv in Milwaukee.

    By Amanda Andersen
    Located in Hamburg, HH
One in a series of six drawings by Amanda Andersen created during an artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2012. During this residency the artist explored ideas of flight while researching the invention and design of the hot air balloon. These drawings were the beginning of a larger group of work reflecting on the duality of the balloon as a symbol for romantic flight as well as a powerful tool of displacement. Here the artist was especially interested in the parts that make up a balloon canopy, the pieces of the pattern are called gores, similar in shape to a natural tree leaf. Specifically a gore is one panel–a segment of a hot air balloon envelope–six of these are sewn together to create a full balloon canopy, therefore six drawings are represented in this series. Without the conceptual background of the piece, it takes on the appearance of a simple organic shape. Minimal repeating pencil lines on neutral colored grey paper fill the gore...
