About

A truly spectactular 18th Century Ethiopian painting for Monophysite observance, pigment on textile. Composed as two separate portraits, each depicting one of the four Christian Evangelists: The left hand portrait of St Matthew, writing his gospel text beside his attribute, The Winged Man, The right hand portrait of St. John writing his gospel beside his attribute, The Eagle. With old wear and damage - mounted on a later rectangular canvas mount for display. It measures approximately 180cm by 105cm.
