- Swan SongBy Jared FitzgeraldLocated in Southampton, NY“Swan Song” is a unique over-glaze Chinese porcelain pot by renowned ceramist and painter, Jared FitzGerald. The turquoise blue colors and willfully rounded shapes gives “Swan Song” an aquatic theme, while the red designs nestled amongst the blue undergrowth gives the pot a fantastical element. “Swan Song” is part of a new series from Fitzgerald’s studios in Jingdezhen, China. This series uses over-glaze, a new ceramic firing technique that diverges from Fitzgerald’s previous ceramic practice, which used the traditional under-glaze technique with blue and white colors. Over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint with a range of colors; unlike with other glaze techniques, such as under- or middle-glaze, over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint onto an already fired ceramic panel, so there is no serious change in the color of the pigments. This is a special technique which allows the artist to mix Chinese painting techniques with western techniques derived from oil painting. Over-glaze decoration is considered one of the most important modern glaze techniques in Jingdezhen now. The traditional overglaze decorative colors in Jingdezhen include Gucai (antique colors...Category
