Thomas Rowlandson (13 July 1757 – 21 April 1827), he was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker, Rowlandson produced both individual social and political satires, as well as large number of illustrations for novels, humorous books, and topographical works. Like other caricaturists of his age such as James Gillray, his caricatures are often robust or bawdy. Rowlandson also produced highly explicit erotica for a private clientele; this was never published publicly at the time and is now only found in a small number of collections. His caricatures included those of people in power such as the Duchess of Devonshire, William Pitt the Younger and Napoleon Bonaparte.
William Combe (25 March 1742 – 19 June 1823) was a British miscellaneous writer. His early life was that of an adventurer, his later was passed chiefly within the "rules" of the King's Bench Prison. He is chiefly remembered as the author of The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax...

A Pair of Pastels -Hebe and Ganymede
Located in London, GB
Attributed to Johann Heinrich Schröder (1757-1812)
Hebe and Ganymede circa1800
A pair of pastels on paper; held in ebonised frames
The German artist, Johann Heinrich Schröder was born in Meining in 1757 and studied at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Kassel under Johann Heinrich-Tischbein (1722-1789). He undertook study tours to England and the Netherlands where he portrayed members of the royal families and on his return to Germany was quickly employed by various courts, becoming the favoured royal portraitist of the Duke of Brunswick. He worked mainly in pastels – producing lively, colourful images – and was the best German artist of his time using this technique. Though not typical for the artist, these mythological figurative works exhibit very similar qualities that make it likely that they are by him, or at the very least, an extremely talented colleague working closely in his circle.
Many slightly different versions of the classical myth exist but in essence the pastels simply depict both Hebe and Ganymede as cup-bearers to the Gods: Hebe, the daughter of Juno, and goddess of youth, vacated this position on becoming the wife of Hercules or possibly was dismissed as a consequence of a fall she met with when in attendance on the gods. Her successor was Ganymede, a Trojan boy, whom Jupiter, in the disguise of an eagle, seized and carried off from the midst of his play-fellows on Mount...

Marco, Mid-Century Polish Tapestry by Zofia Butrymowicz
Located in Wilton, CT
Zofia Butrymowicz (1904-1987, Warsaw, Poland) was one in a select group of Polish textile artists who were first introduced in Chicago, USA in the 1970s by legendary dealers Anne and Jacques Baruch. Butrymowicz's body of work continues to influence the fiber art world to this day.
"New experiments in art have always been of interest to me" Butrymowicz once observed, "whether I agree with them or not, and therefore I never pass by and I am never indignant at any expression in art. I strongly believe that in the wide range of experiments there will also be some elements of the development of culture."
During the post-war period, when the countries of Eastern Europe were locked down behind the Iron Curtain, weavers there found materials in short supply. As a result, many of these artists turned to unconventional materials such as metal, paper and reeds. Zofia Butrymowicz, of Poland, recognized for innovative works in 60s and 70s, used heavy, irregular wools, barely spun at all. In 1969, she visited Canadian weaver, Mariette Rousseau-Vermette and her husband, painter and ceramicist, Claude Vermette, outside Montreal where the couple lived and worked. Zofia and Mariette had both been participants in International Tapestry Biennials in Lausane, Switzerland in the 60s and in Wall Hangings at the MoMA in New York in 1969.
Butrymowicz stayed with the Vermettes for several months, using Mariette’s looms to create tapestries that were displayed with Claude’s ceramics at a local gallery. Butrymowicz used wool from Mariette’s source. Mariette was particular about the color and intensity of her wool — she worked with technicians to perfect the spinning and dyeing so that the wool had a silky luster and dyed “more beautifully” than mechanically spun wool. The wool was a marked departure from the material Butrymowicz had access to in Poland. She “painted” her weavings with colors and shadings of yarns, including only a shimmering suggestion of a shape, often a circle, as she had done in the past, but the glisten and sumptuousness of the yarn in these works set them apart from her previous weavings.
Selected exhibitions: Central Museum of Textiles, Lodz, Poland; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Illinois; National Museum, Poznan, Poland; National Museum, Warsaw, Poland; Skopje Museum of Contemporary Art, Poland; Exempla, Munich, Germany; Museum of Modern Art, Pasadena, California; Pierre Pauli...

Bronze and Marble Relief Plaque of Napoléon and Marie-Louise
Located in New Orleans, LA
The visages of Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte and Empress Marie-Louise grace this relief plaque celebrating the couple’s 1810 nuptials. The image is based on the official medals by Bertrand Andrieu that were issued by the Paris Mint between 1810 and 1813 to commemorate their marriage. The couple is rendered in profile in brilliant gilt bronze contrasted against a richly veined specimen of green marble with classical accents of laurel leaves and an imperial eagle. Empire design relied on these types of emblems of power from antiquity to promote Napoléon’s reign and link his regime to the great societies of the past.
Similar bronze plaques of Napoléon and the Archduchess Marie-Louise are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the Harvard Art...

"Teapot, " Leopard's Head, London during the reign King George III, by John Emes
By John Emes
Located in Milwaukee, WI
This teapot from London during the reign of King George III was created by John Emes. It features a leopard's head and is made of sterling silver.
7" x 11" x 4"
John Emes (1762–1810) was a British engraver and water-colour painter. His wife Rebecca Emes ran a successful silver business after his death. Emes was born on the 30 December 1762 to William Emes, a landscape gardener from Mackworth near Derby.
He is best known by his engraving of the picture by James Jefferys of The Destruction of the Spanish Batteries before Gibraltar. The etching for this is dated 1786, and as it was published in October 1789 by Emes and Elizabeth Woollett, widow of William Woollett it is possible that it was begun by Woollett. Emes was also a water-colour painter, and executed tinted drawings of views in the Lake District and elsewhere, some of which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1790 and 1791.
There are three water-colour drawings by Emes in the Print Room at the British Museum, one being a large drawing representing ‘The Meeting of the Royal Society of British Archers in Gwersylt Park, Denbighshire;’ the figures in this are drawn by R. Smirke, R.A., and it was afterwards engraved in aquatint by C. Apostool. A set of sixteen views of the lakes in Cumberland and Westmoreland, drawn by J. Smith and J. Emes, were engraved in aquatint by S. Alken; these were incorporated into Thomas West...
