About the Item
Artist Comments
This autumnal piece was derived from a personal photo of a location in rural York County, PA, not far from the Susquehanna river. Except for the individual fallen leaves, most of the foliage is treated as masses of color, which creates visual impact and helps to frame the white house by the intersection. Think of this as a non-traditional rendition of traditional subject matter. The sides are painted brown, and it comes ready to hang. The surface of my works is textured, partly from the way in which I prepare the surface, and partly due to the style of painting, with thick paint applied with energy. This is deliberate, as I want to create works in which the hand of the artist is evident.
About the Artist
Robert Hofherr avoids depicting a landscape exactly as he sees it or as the viewer might expect. Instead, he enjoys reimagining landscapes and painting his pieces indoors at a fairly rapid pace. The works of French Fauve artists Maurice de Vlaminck and Andr; Derain initially got him interested in painting, and also influenced his decision to not use grey in his works. During his free time he enjoys spending time with his kids, walking his dogs and taking road trips to out-of-way places in the mid-Atlantic region. He currently lives in Maryland.
