ROBERT WOGENSKY "VOL DES OISEAUX" WOOL TAPESTRY, SIGNED, TITLED FRENCH ARTIST, MADE IN TUNISIA, C.1960 59 X 75.5 INCHES Robert Wogensky Born 1919 He was of Polish origin, his family lived in France for several generations. He was a student from 1925 to 1937 at the high school Buffon while frequenting the museums assiduously Robert Wogensky decided to become a painter at the sight of " Guernica " of Picasso at the Exhibition of 1937. His artistic studies at the René Jaudon studio (where he has a classmate Jean-Claude Guignebert with whom he befriended and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris was quickly interrupted by the war. After the Liberation, he stayed with Jean Lurçat in Lanzac and worked with him on some of his cartons. Also in 1945, Robert Wogensky met Denise Majorel, editor of his first tapestry box ( Les oiseaux , 1945) and future director of La Demeure gallery, where he later exhibited. From October 1950 to 1956, he worked as a teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, while continuing to live in Paris (he has just moved to the rue Boissonade where his neighbor, who became his friend, was Antoni Clavé. He designed sets and costumes for the Eastern Dramatic Center, and executed several murals (steamer La Bourdonnais, Saint-Antoine Hospital in Paris), cartons and mosaics. In 1956, he was appointed professor of mural art at the National School of Applied Arts and Crafts in Paris where he taught until 1985. In 1962, he met Pierre and Jacqueline Domec, directors of the Pierre Domec Gallery in Paris, he exhibit his paintings in the following years, on the themes of Water , Fire and Living Nature . Jean Paulhan wrote the preface. During these same years he executed several cartons for the National Furniture (Singing of Stars), for the French Tourist Center of New York (The Four Elements), for the Ministry of Agriculture (Universe plant), for the university from Strasbourg (Cosmos). In 1966 and 1969 he produced two large murals made for the Faculty of Medicine of Paris. In 1985, a tapestry entitled A bird, Stars was made by the Manufacture of Beauvais for the collections of the Mobilier national. In 1988, he executed of a mural for Fontenay - sous - Bois Town Hall . In 1990, the City of Angers ordered two tapestries for the City Hall. In parallel to the murals, Robert Wogensky continued to practice painting in all its forms and techniques, watercolor, ink, acrylic, oil painting. The series of Gardens, Shadows and Silhouettes, Contemplators (exhibited in Paris and then New York), Imaginary Landscapes, Mountains and Walls followed each other. In later years his research has turned to a more abstract imagination. For Lydia Harambourg, "Robert Wogensky followed a trajectory whose successive phases have built a work that is only matched by his pictorial eloquence. The field of the canvas is the stake of an introspection opened on the infinite, like a mirror or a window ". Robert Wogensky had many one man exhibitions and multiple group exhibitions.
