About the Item

An abstract expressionist oil on heavy paper by Aaron Levy. The work is signed and dated 1962 in pencil on the lower right. Newly matted and framed and ready to hang. The overall size is 19.75 x 23.5 inches. Sight size is 11.75 x 15.5 inches. A Park Avenue resident with a summer home in East Hampton, Levy was acquainted with many of the preeminent artists of the New York School who also spent significant time in East Hampton. He was a member of the Camino Gallery, which operated out of the East Village from 1956 to 1963. Camino was one of the galleries that would come to be known collectively as the “10th Street Galleries.” The galleries were run co-operatively by the artists, with very little or no full-time staff. Many artists who would eventually achieve significant renown were exhibiting members of one or more of the 10th Street Galleries. In particular, many important female abstract expressionists leveraged the benefits of the cooperative, during a time when women and minorities were marginalized and often precluded from reaching the upper echelons of the art ecosystem. Elaine de Kooning and Alice Neel - two of the most important painters of the 20th century - were both members of Camino Gallery, alongside Levy. When Camino closed in 1963, Levy joined Phoenix Gallery, which by that time, had moved to a new, more established location on Madison Avenue.

RONALD AHLSTROM "ABSTRACT IN WITH TEXT" ACRYLIC AND COLLAGE ON CANVASBOARD, SIGNED AMERICAN. C.1970 18 X 24 INCHES Ronald Ahlström 1922-2012 Born in Chicago, Ronald Ahlström graduated from the School of the Art Institute, where he frequently exhibited his collages and paintings in the Chicago and Vicinity exhibits of the 1950s and 1960s. He also showed at Exhibition Momentum in the ’60s, and was selected for the Corcoran Biennial. Together with his colleagues and fellow-abstractionists Robert Nickle, Morris Barazani, Harry Bouras, George Kokines, and George Waite, he exhibited at McCormick Place in an independently produced survey of contemporary Chicagoans, circa 1962, under the banner 12 Chicago Artists. An adept and sensitive painter, Ahlström’s most personal work is as an abstract expressionist collage maker. Using strips of paper, sometimes weathered and beaten into rough hewn surfaces, he creates immaculately layered, lively, gestural compositions.
