About

An influential patron, collector, and writer, Albert Gallatin was also an abstract painter. His Gallery of Living Art at New York University on Washington Square housed an important collection of modern American and French painting and provided a foothold for abstract art in America. Gallatin’s early acquisitions included works by James McNeill Whistler, members of The Eight, and works from various American Impressionists. His taste in collecting grew to encompass the entirety of the early modern canon, including works by Cézanne, Picasso, Gris, Brancusi, and Braque, as well as works by early American modern artists, such as Charles Demuth. Gallatin personally directed the operations of the museum, often following contemporary critical ideas about modern art as guides to shaping the collection. After many years of stewardship, Gallatin transferred the entire collection to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1942. Gallatin’s devotion to vanguard art of the twentieth century resonated in his own work. His style initially evolved out of Cubism’s analytic and synthetic phases, particularly in his treatment of overlapping geometric forms set within planar spaces. Investigating still life, aspects of figuration, and pure abstraction, he produced hard-edged compositions in oil and other media that often resemble stylistically the works of Kandinsky as well as Purists Amedée Ozenfant and Edouard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier). As his career evolved, Gallatin began to simplify his work, reducing his pictures to simple geometric forms set amid broad color regions. He considered his oeuvre an extended series of ideas, and correspondingly he often sequentially numbered each canvas on the back and inscribed them with the month and year of its completion. In Untitled, a painting from the artist’s mature phase, Gallatin has pushed his way entirely toward abstraction. In its formal purity it resembles the works of Ozenfant and Jeanneret; however, unlike their works, it does not reference recognizable objects. The composition, minimally constructed of a few interlocking geometrical color regions, is simple and elegant, reflecting the ideas that Gallatin began to assimilate in his later career.
