Intro: Alexis Portilla's large scale pieces like Anemone, Black Elk, Thor Twins, Tokyo, Chromatic Fantasy are spectacular pieces in terms of the atmospheric brushwork, colors and textures. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts. Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture. Speak like a Child is a song title from a Herbie Hancock recording and Pale Fire is a novel by Vladimir Nabokov. “Pale fire” was originally a diptych inspired by the multi panel pieces the artist saw in religious paintings as an art student. A favorite theme is the use of diptychs, tt was never the religious subject matter but the use of multi panel works to tell a story that interested him. “Using simple forms and creating swathes of rich texture, Alexis Portilla builds atmospheric abstract paintings that convey a sense of time having passed. Brushy areas of color suggest the indeterminacy of memory, while bold linear forms speak for the present.” In contrast, he has smaller works in the form of his beautiful unusual pieces in oil and beeswax which are fascinating. “In some of his smaller works, Portilla experimented with beeswax. Applying a smooth coat of wax over the surface, the artist sealed in his sparse, abstract forms, while leaving whole sections empty, the images hover in the wax, as if frozen in time, yet the pieces have a fresh, almost dewy look.” - Meredith Mendelsohn, Art News magazine review The artist Alexis Portilla obtained his Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1990, and his BFA at the noted Pratt Institute. The artist has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections. While it is hard to tie them to any one style or movement, they manage to be a part of all of them. Hackett’s work is influenced by pattern, midcentury design, art of indigenous peoples, and the art and craft movement, combined with a loose examination of the natural world.
