About the Item

Allen Harrison’s “May” is an abstract oil painting on panel. The piece measures 48in. x 48in. and features yellow, light blues and purples, rusty browns, red and orange, and some black. Harrison’s evocative skyscapes are created through a complex, self-imposed system. Before Alan starts painting he collages detailed Tibetan Thangka drawings taken from tracings he created.. He then paints over the collages. The Thangka’s characteristic spiraling clouds, wavy tongues of flame, and the entwining limbs and sinuous bodies of Buddhist deities can often be detected beneath the oil paint. His photographs of the sky from the roof of his studio dictate the colors that Harrison uses as he reinterprets the sky. Although Tibetan Thangka paintings are typically displayed at Buddhist festivals, Harrison’s deliberate process allows him to transcend their predetermined purpose while they remain a swirling blueprint beneath the cloudscapes. Allen Harrison has shown his work extensively for several decades, with over 25 exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Byer Museum of Art. Harrison’s work is also displayed in both private and public collections including but not limited to the collections of Architectural Digest Publishing Corporation, General Electric, 20th Century Fox, Lowes Corporation, BankAmerica Corporation, the Arco Collection and Goldman-Sachs in Los Angeles. In addition, Allen Harrison’s pieces have been included in publications like Art In America, Artnews, and the Los Angeles Times. Besides his career as a painter, Harrison has taught painting and drawing at several California colleges over the past 40 years.
