About

2017, Acrylic on canvas, 78 x 72 in. Exhibited as part of Anna's 2017 solo exhibition, Heroes For Ghosts, at Galleri Urbane in Dallas. Artist Anna Kunz is multilingual. That is, she uses multiple artistic “languages” to create her final works: “I like to include processes that belong to architecture, performance, painting, printmaking, sculpture... 2D painting had its limitations for what I was trying to explore in painting as an idea or philosophical pursuit. I want it not to be static and to be inclusive… I am always questioning the relevance of painting...In order for me to feel like I was questioning and pushing for and against the ideas in painting, I started to move into transparent materials that had some flexibility and variable legibilities.” Dimensions, color, and light are material and textural properties or “languages” utilized by Kunz in her multi-faceted process, which she likens to composing a musical score. Recent exhibitions include Registers at LVL3 in Chicago, curated by Andrew Blackley of Golden Gallery, Luminae at White Box NYC, a group show featuring the work of Louise Fishman and Alexandra Phillips, curated by Juan Puentes, Spectral Landscape at Gallery 400 UIC, curated by John Neff and Pamela Fraser. Kunz has been the recipient of The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the Rema Hort Mann Foundation in New York City, the Emerging Artist award from the National Museum of Women in the Arts in WA, D.C. Kunz received her ME at The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, MFA Northwestern University, Evanston, IL and BFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL.
