Anne Russinof
Anne Russinof, Linchpin, 2018, oil on canvas, 44 x 50 inches

2018

About the Item

Anne Russinof's newest works are part of a series in which she intimates baroque ceiling patterns. Having long been inspired by architectural forms and patterns because they provide a counterpoint to her loose gestural work, and also a sense of movement, her color here is electric, and the paintings seem almost to emit a nocturnal light. Russinof's work is always layered, done wet-on-wet, and color serves to create a window onto natural space and light, whatever the construction. This particular grouping could almost be said to radiate both inward and outward to the viewer. Anne Russinof lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Originally from Chicago, she is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received an MFA from Pratt Institute. Russinof has been a resident at the Yaddo and Millay Art Colonies, and is currently a member of American Abstract Artists. The artist recently completed a suite of etchings at VanDeb Editions. Her work is currently on view in Chelsea with ODETTA, East Hampton, Paris, London, and Italy and she recently participated in the Salon Zurcher art fair in NYC.

  • Deborah Freedman, Given Melody 15, 2016, Paper, Oil Paint
    By Deborah Freedman
    Located in Darien, CT
Deborah Freedman is a painter who lives and works in New York City. Her work is deeply informed by nature –especially the Catskill Mountains - and landscape painting of the 19th and early 20th century. After 9/11 when the Ashokan Reservoir became almost inaccessible and ”threatened” what had been idyllic became “disturbed”. The pictures became less ideal and less about location and more abstract and more emotional. The titles; Good Night Irene, Praying for Rain, Cold Spring, Disturbed Landscapes and The End of Snow describe these concerns. “This is landscape as an anatomy lesson; landscape conflated with human form. Landscape which holds the promise of physical pleasure. The abstraction holds the emotional content. If it sounds simplistic, imagine trying to organize a coherent vision of something that does not exist. It mixes the personal with the impersonal, landscape in the guise of familiarity.” Stewart Waltzer. Artnet. A partial list of collections include The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Public Library, Rutgers University, The Department of State, the Library of Congress, IPCNY,The Hess Collection, CITI, Morgan Guarantee Trust, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Freedman is a co-founder with Marjorie VanDyke of VanDeb Editions, a printmaking studio dedicated to collaborating with artists to experiment with intaglio and monotype, located in Long Island City, NYC. Residencies include the MacDowell Colony on a printmaking residency making monoprints using etched plates with highly textured surfaces. The tradition there is to invite other residents for studio visits or presentations which led to a collaboration with Alan Fletcher...

Fritz Bultman (1919-1985) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, sculptor, and collagist and a member of the New York School of artists. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Germany to join the Bauhaus at the age of 16. There, he was acquainted with Maria Hofmann, the wife of Hans Hofmann, which initiated a move to New York to study under his guidance. Bultman set himself apart from other Abstract Expressionists with his meticulously organized abstract compositions, use of sculpture, and the adoption of collage as a core practice. In 1950, Fritz Bultman and 27 other distinguished artists signed a letter protesting the conservative nature of the work selected for a forthcoming national exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The signees of this historic letter were identified as, the “Irascibles,” resulting in the majority achieving international acclaim as Abstract Expressionist artists including Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among others. Throughout his life Fritz Bultman received several awards including Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships and was a founding member of the Long Point...
