Auguste HERBIN (1882-1960):
Painter of portraits, landscapes, still lifes. French.
He started to draw at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lille, in 1900-1901 and moved to Paris two years later in 1903. In 1909, he moved to the Bateaux Lavoir.
He participated to the Salon des Independants, and many others fairs.
His entire learning period was influenced by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionism of Cezanne and Van Gogh. He was associated with several movements, like the Fauves, then Cubism. He has a particular interest in abstraction, which he developped, and became a practitioner and theorist.
In the history of abstraction, Herbin had an institutional action, which was manifested by the creation of the Abstraction Creation group, created with Vantongerloo in 1931. They brought together all the abstract artists working at or in connection with Paris. He was one of the founders of the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1946, where he exhibited regularly. Besides, he was a member of the board of directors until 1955.
