About the Item

Bruce Helander is an artist, writer and curator. He received a BFA and MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, where later he served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He also studied at Yale University and is a former White House Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and a member of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. He has won four separate artist grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His work is represented in over fifty permanent public collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as Albright-Knox, Buffalo, Brooklyn Museum, Columbus Museum of Art, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Hudson River Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum, Montreal Museum of Art, Nasher Museum of Art, Newport Art Museum, Norton Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institution. He has contributed a number of illustrations to The New Yorker. The Boston Globe called Helander an art world Renaissance man, and Kenworth Moffett, former director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, declared in Gold Coast magazine that “If there was a Pulitzer Prize for collage, Helander would sure win it.” Tom Wolfe declared that “…Helander out-collages Braque!” He has received over 200 national reviews in publications such as Art in America, Art & Antiques, ARTnews, The New Criterion, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Miami Herald and The Huffington Post. The source material for Helander’s work is the printed page, particularly from vintage publications. After a selection process, the paper is cut into usable forms and glued down until a composition is complete. Working from an image of the collage printed on canvas (a ‘blueprint’), Helander meticulously re-paints the entire surface inspired by the collage, adding additional embellishments. Helander has exhibited his work in over 200 gallery and museum exhibitions and has been represented by leading galleries in New York City, including Marisa del Re Gallery, O.K. Harris Works of Art and Peder Bonnier. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in cities around the world, including London, Rome, Venice, Paris, Stockholm and Dubai, and is currently working on a survey of his works for the Coral Springs Museum of Art opening in 2020. The artist’s work continues to be acquired by many top collectors, several of whom are featured in ARTnews’ List of Top 200 Collectors.
