About the Item
ONE WEEK ONLY SALE
"Midtown III" is a vibrant abstract work by David Kapp that captures the immediacy of his native New York City and the fast-paced lifestyle that can blur before a person's eyes. Intersections, street corners, and streets take on the appearances of things they aren't. Illuminated like stained glass, if the viewer stares long enough, the painting comes alive and stares back at them.
David Kapp was born and raised in New York City in 1953. He is married to the artist Cecily Kahn, daughter of the artists Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason. Kapp earned his BFA from Windham College, Vermont and his MFA from Queens College, New York. He received a Creative Artists Public Service Fellowship in Painting in 1982 and the Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American Academy and National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1985. He is best known for his paintings of the contemporary urban landscape.
The format of the work tends to be vertical or square and the horizon line itself has been pushed beyond the edge of the canvas. Kapp's paintings have been described as having "the feeling of silence that follows traffic noise, or the emotional distance of standing behind plate glass." His expressionistic oil paintings of street scenes and the city capture the dynamic spirit of his native New York City. The dark night sky and its skyscrapers are enhanced by Kapp’s masterly use of color, light, and shadow, render fresh and immediate the familiarities of fast-paced city life. Kapp’s primary concern is to convey movement through space, believing this to carry the emotional charge necessary to engage viewers. He emphasizes the importance of spontaneity to his outcomes.
David Kapp has had over twenty-five solo exhibitions throughout the US. Kapp is the recipient of two American Academy & National Institute of Arts and Letters awards, as well as the Hassam Purchase Prize and the Rosenthal Foundation award. His works are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Academy Museum, Colby Museum of Art, Maine and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX. His work has also been exhibited throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan and has been included in exhibitions at the Brattleboro Museum of Art, Vermont, the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, Japan, The Painting Center, New York and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Collections include the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Portland Art Museum, Oregon.

- "Red Harmony" Abstract, Geometric, Colors, Bright Red, GreenBy William AntonowLocated in Detroit, MISALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Red Harmony" is an abstract painting that does have a sculptural presence in the shapes of the red areas. The lush greens blend various shades into a background that while it does contrast sharply with the reds, it is not in conflict. The overall effect of this work is dynamic in its energy while at the same time harmonious. One of the original Cass Corridor artists from the 1960s William Antonow studied at the School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now the College for Creative Studies) and at Wayne State University, where he received his BFA (1967) and MA (1970.) Antonow’s first one-person show at the Willis Gallery in 1971, represented a radical departure from his early work – abstract bronzes shown at the Michigan Artists exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1969 and 1970. A founding member of the Willis, Antonow publicized his exhibition with a cryptic invitation stating, “art isn’t anything.” Echoing the challenge implicit in the exhibition announcement, the works in the show consisted of precariously balanced piles of such non-art materials as wood crates and barrels, corrugated paper or cardboard, cellophane and beer cans. These brash, paint-slathered juxtapositions of salvaged objects were perhaps the first example of the nascent “tough art” aesthetic of the Cass Corridor. (Both Gordon Newton’s wood constructions and Bob Sestok’s crude “radio wheels” first appeared in 1972.) In 1975, in the inaugural group exhibition of the Willis at its new location in the Fisher Building...Category
