About the Item

Diane Whalley Heatwave Original Abstract Expressionist Painting Paint on Canvas Size: H 100cm x W 100cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a work may look. Heatwave is an original abstract expressionist painting by contemporary abstract artist Diane Whalley. This large artwork was created during the heatwave of late Spring and early Summer of 2020. A large canvas was taken into the garden and laid on the lawn and paint poured over the canvas in bold, rich colours and large brush strokes swept through the paint with splashes to finish. These deep colours and swathes of paint were meant to be under layers of a new creation, but the heatwave had obviously had an influence and it represented the moment so well that there should be no further painting, so, on that hot day in a Cornish garden close the beautiful Cornish coastline Heatwave was born – the oranges and reds representing the heat of the day, the blues the sky and sea, the white splashing waves and the green of the garden. But it is believed that there is also subconscious inspiration from family travels across the Mediterranean by boat! Diane Whalley has been creating and designing for a number of years across a number of disciplines, but since 2016 she began her adventure with abstract painting, mainly in acrylics, sometimes with oil pastel, graphite and mark making details. Her paintings are often a mix of layered muted colours with splashes of brighter shades, using abstract images and ethereal, painterly swathes resulting in fresh, light and immersive compositions. Through the layers of paint can be glimpsed images and detailing. She paints intuitively from the imagination and personal reflections. After graduating from Liverpool School of Art and Design with a BA (hons) degree Diane worked for a number of years for the media and PR agencies. It was after becoming a mum to two daughters that she returned to her love of art and design. At first she worked with textiles producing and selling quirky and colourful pictures in Warwickshire and Kent. When tragedy struck her family she was propelled onto a new path with her daughters deciding to make Cornwall her home. It was a time of reflection and learning to sail, with longs trips around the Mediterranean. This period has greatly influenced her work – full of contemplation, vibrancy, experimentation and expressionism. Diane now works from her garden studio and gallery at her home just on the outskirts of Fowey. Here she is surrounded by AONB and just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Cornish coastline, from where she draws some of her inspiration. Over the years her artworks have been exhibited in Kent, Warwickshire and Cornwall – including Cornwall Open Studios week and selected artworks for Penwith Gallery associate members summer exhibition 2018 and St.Ives Society of Artists winter exhibition 2019. Diane’s artworks can be found in private collections in Paris, Dublin, Australia, South Africa and across the UK.

Contemporary abstract painting. The use of Stajan-Ferkul's distinct neutral palette is carried through into her abstract paintings where emphasis is put on simplifying the composition. Textures and patterns play a large role in her minimal yet powerful work. // Andrea Stajan-Ferkul is a Canadian artist whose work conveys a sense of experimentation through the use of paint, fabric collage and abstract mark-making. While not exclusive to fashion, dresses have been a compositional focus throughout her oeuvre. With an emphasis on timelessness, her series of dress paintings shift between realistic representation and interpretive impressions. In contrast, her series of abstract works embrace minimalism, considerate to a restrained palette and composition. Stajan-Ferkul began her career in fashion advertising before shifting her focus to fine art in 2000. Her work has been exhibited widely through galleries and art fairs, and hangs in private and public collections across Canada, US and Europe. A graduate of Sheridan College of Art and Design, Andrea's paintings can be found in numerous public and private collections, her work has been published in magazines and book covers, and prints are distributed internationally. In 2009, Stajan-Ferkul was invited to exhibit her work in Ottawa’s Rideau Hall, hosted by (then) Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean. keywords: abstract, minimal art, minimalism, grey, pink, modern art...
