Dolores Tema studied design at Parsons School of Design in New York City, and after completing her degree at Hunter College of the City of New York She then worked as a graphic designer for Shell Oil and City Bank, both in New York City. After moving to Connecticut, she continued her study in visual art at Wesleyan University in Middletown, and spent a summer at Scuola Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy. While teaching art full time at a Jesuit high school in Fairfield, Connecticut, Tema also finds time to produce works in watercolor and various print mediums. Many of her pieces begin as sketches made on location around her home and while traveling. Her love of working on location adds to the vitality and life in her work. "Art is an exploration of self as determined by the world around us," the artist says. "While we are anchored in time and space, art acts to bring us beyond the ordinary, to capture what can ultimately be defined as truth. I think anyone who involves himself in this process experiences that place which defies time and space, and where the journey begins. My journey began as a child, observing my surroundings, and those around me. I have always translated these observations in drawings, paintings and even small objects built. My current work involves the tension between that which we know and that which is felt. This tension is realized as colors come together and merge into each other to become whole. I hope to achieve a kind of movement; a dance and balance in the work through the use of shape, color, and form."

  • "Restless Sea, " Contemporary Abstract Painting
    By Teodora Guererra
    Located in Westport, CT
This contemporary abstract statement painting by Teodora Guererra is made with acrylic and oil paint on canvas. It features a coastal palette, with layers of paint applied in wide, sweeping gestures, layering varying shades of blue over one another. The painting is signed by the artist on the back of the canvas, and is wired and ready to hang. Teodora Guererra’s abstract artistic vision has evolved throughout her years spent painting and teaching in Fairfield County, Connecticut; Tucson, Arizona, and upstate New York. Arizona’s naturally radiant landscape and arid climate led her to experiment with rich under-painting and vivid color; while the shifting seasons of the East Coast inspired Guererra to pursue dripping and staining techniques. Her focus has always been pushing the limits through experimentation with new materials. “As an artist, painting can be tormenting and sublime at the same time," the artist says of her work. "I'm a big risk taker, experimenting with different materials to layer, stain and saturate color on large canvases. My most successful work looks as if it happened all at once. It sometimes takes 7 or more paintings to produce a successful one and then it's a beautiful thing." Guererra received her undergraduate and graduate Art degrees from Southern Connecticut University, The College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College. Guererra’s paintings can be found in public and private collections across the U.S., including the Allmen Health and Wellness Center for Women in New York and SUNY Brockport, NY, William & Sonoma, San Francisco, CA. Her influences are Pat Steir, John McCracken, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Jud, Bernar Venet, Agnes Martin and Brian Rutenberg...

Arao’s geometric sewn fabric paintings reference woven textiles and ethnic patterns from the Philippines, reinterpreted in kaleidoscopic fabric compositions. Fabric, a material that seemingly begs for human touch, is something we all have a level of familiarity with. Whether it is clothing worn or removed from the body, commercially bought, hand dyed, or recycled weathered canvas, Arao harnesses the tactility and multiple interpretations of fabric, often alluding to its central relationship to the human body. Precisely sewn together into tapestry-like wall works, Arao’s background in painting is evident in his mastery of color and composition. Paired with his conceptual link to his identity as a gay Filipino-American, Arao’s works simultaneously reach back through history and into the future as powerful symbols of representation and beauty. Gathered from disparate sources, carrying the psychic or physical traces of the hands that manufactured or the bodies that wore the textiles used in his fabric paintings, there is a legacy of nuance woven into the fibers of each work. Written into each color choice, use of various types of fabric, and overall composition, is a steadfast trust in process and faith in intuition. Regarding this body of work, Arao states, “ In my sewn paintings, the stability of geometric forms is disrupted through the use of altered patterns and asymmetry, creating a space that’s dynamic and shifting – much like the concept of queerness itself.” Flexible, open-ended, and bounding with vibrant color, Paolo Arao...
