Hachiro Kanno
TN 680 D by Hachiro Kanno - Large calligraphy-based abstract painting

2015

About the Item

TN 680 D, painting by contemporary Japanese artist Hachiro Kanno. Ink and acrylic on canvas, diptych composed of two 200 x 100 cm panels. The painter draws its resources from Japanese calligraphy and his favourite themes in Zen philosophy. Hachiro Kanno’s painting succeeds in synthesizing his Oriental heritage with western influences. Japanese calligraphy, with its expressive way of tracing each line, constitutes the basis of his approach. The artist transforms it into an abstract writing, a “writing come painting”. Hachiro Kanno uses Japanese ink, acrylic and, for the white, powdered pearl shell which gives his compositions a changing glint depending on the angle of observation. There is in his canvasses the immediately visible and then there’s the gradually revealing.

SET US IN STONE II 2022 Paris, France Originally created as part of Nicholas' solo exhibition "This, and Thereafter (Plumes)," December 10, 2022 - January 7, 2023. The theme illustrated the enigmatic uncertainty around what might happen after life. A range of paintings were presented – vibrant and ethereal – touching on different aspects of this notion. Each painting had a different point of view, oftentimes focusing around the inevitability of what is to come, and if and how it influences the present. This particular piece centers around personal legacy, how you will be remembered, and how your life vanishes into an abstraction as time goes by. This notion is visualized with a bust set in stone. The technique Evans used was a mixing of water-based ink with a hint of pink, that he knew would react when overlaid with white acrylic, pulling out a lighter hue of the pink ink. The white silhouette of a portrait set in stone creates a ghostly continuation of the underlaid pattern. Option to create a pair alongside "Set Us In Stone I" (as pictured). Price and size are per painting. Evans Deventer...

TIME, IT TAKES I 2022 Paris, France A graphic and bold abstract painting on linen, with dark blue green ink and white acrylic accents. • "Lus Osculi" (Abstract Black & White, Graphic Painting, Roman-inspired, Neutral)
    By Nicholas Evans
    Located in Paris, IDF
Drawing inspiration from the ancient Roman term "Los Osculi," translating to "right to kiss," the artist delves into a compelling exploration of the past's intriguing customs. In ancient Rome, women were prohibited from drinking as it was believed to lead to adultery and even possess abortifacient properties. Consequently, the husband and male family members of an "honest" woman possessed the right to kiss her on the mouth to ensure her sobriety. The allure of fleeting kisses, whispers of scent, and the sensuality of suspicion captivated the artist's imagination. On an antique French canvas...
