Heather Hartman
WHIRL II - mixed media abstract painting of light and shadow, purple, yellow

2016

About the Item

WHIRL II captures the soft patterned shadow of the leaves. This painting is is part of an on-going series that explores the light and landscape in Tennessee. Hartman creates an image on paper then stretches a silkscreen on top of the image to create the diffused final image that you see. This particular painting utilizes muted violets and soft neutrals to create an overall abstracted leaf pattern with delicate soft circles scattered throughout the center. More information below... Hartman's work responds to the constant flux of the visual world and our temporary space within it. Painted images on paper appear soft like the distortions of light, shadow, and atmosphere as they are viewed through a layer of gouache and polyester mesh. The resulting images are a combination of blurry, atmospheric forms and distorted shadows that lie beneath washes of color and intense passages of light. In the paintings, the arrangement of these elements alludes to an ever-shifting landscape; a place where things slip in and out of focus and viewers cannot always locate themselves. This sense of shifting space is particularly relevant in an age where our relationship to physical place is increasingly tenuous. "Our world is transient, and the struggle to capture the edge of perception is what drives me to paint." - Hartman Heather Hartman was born in Los Angeles, California in 1983. She was interested in art at a young age, and in December of 1989 her family moved to the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee. Hartman was deeply impacted by the atmosphere, weather, and constantly changing skies in her new home. In addition she was struck by the impact of suburban development on the surrounding landscape. Hartman attended Auburn University and received her Bachelors of Fine Art in 2005. She earned a Master of Fine Art with a concentration in Painting and Drawing at the University of Tennessee in 2009. Her work has been featured in shows throughout the country. Most notably, Hartman’s work was recently included in the 28th Annual McNeese Works on Paper National Exhibition, and she was given an Honorable Mention at the Knoxville Museum of Art’s Artist on Location Exhibition. She was featured in the 365 artist/ 365 days blog in 2014. Her work has been written about by Dr. Jerry Cullum of Art Papers, and is in the collection of Auburn University. Hartman lives and works in Knoxville, Tennessee where she is a member of the Vacuum Shop Studios Artist Collaborative. Hartman is an Instructor of Art at Carson-Newman University, Roane State Community College, and Walters State Community College.

  • Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Seeing Breathing, 2020, gouache, thread, 8 x 15 in
    By Alexandra Rutsch Brock
    Located in Darien, CT
These new small-scale paintings were created using gouache on handmade paper. Alexandra Rutsch Brock then “drew” with a sewing machine using various colored threads. Using the thread as a painted line, playing with the marks and motifs the machine allows that creates contrast in both surface and color. They are sewn directly with no preliminary sketches, just instinctive gesture, sometimes in a similar color to enhance a texture, other times contrasting as a new element. The entangled threads that dangle down emphasize the materiality. Working so closely to the surface, she is aware of the senses of seeing, breathing, touching and feeling……………escaping into these new surfaces. Alexandra Rutsch Brock has exhibited in solo and group shows most recently at The Keck School at USC, CA, The Painting Center, NY, Village West Gallery, NJ and Misericordia University, PA. Her work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine SV Vol44. Her recent co-curations include “HyperAccumulators” with Elizabeth Saperstein at Pelham Art Center, NY and “Among Friends” project with artists Patricia Fabricant and Beth Dary...
