James O'Shea
Climate (Abstract Painting on Paper in Teal and Citron with Grey Wood Frame)

2010

About the Item

Climate (Abstract Painting on Paper in Teal and Citron with Grey Wood Frame) by James O'Shea Abstract painting on paper in blue and green earth tones 14 x 18 inches, gouache and enamel on mylar 21 x 24 x 1.5 inches frame, light grey pickled wood frame with mat James O'Shea has been praised for years for his work as a colorist. His expert handling of gouache produces layer upon layer of transparent color to create compositions that are once architectural with organic gestural, strokes. This work on paper has a stunning palette of numerous shades of turquoise, citron and chartreuse greens, and slices of deep plum purple, a palette and composition that calls to mind the works of West Coast artist, Richard Diebenkorn. Carrie Haddad Gallery has been exhibiting Mr. O'Shea's work in the gallery for more than 15 years. A true master of mediums, this artist works in oil, gouache, fresco secco, acrylic and collage. Notes about the artist: O'Shea's compositions of layered colors and shapes, seeming architectural and yet organic, are inspired by experiences near his studio on the Hudson River. The artist's interest in the energy surrounding nature's changing of seasons is clear as each color and shape come to represent a particular time of day or year. O’Shea finds revelation in observing the world while it’s deep in hibernation during the winter months. With foliage shed from the trees, therein lies nature’s defining qualities – branches that are finely etched against blue and gray winter skies, animals that are exposed to the elements, their tracks in the snow leaving proof of scurried movements. These characteristics of the land can only truly be known when it is cold and summer’s distractions are put to rest. O’Shea allows loose brush strokes to mimic the bare bones structure of the landscape, finding perhaps his greatest pleasure in supplying the color. Palettes shift from a deep, blue-ish grey in the late winter to a bright, candied pastel in the early summer. O’Shea suggests the most delightful and unexpected color schemes; intense hues of blue are interwoven with bouts of rich maroon, a pairing that urges preparation for the cooler months. James O'Shea was born in 1952 in Buffalo, New York. He lived in London from 1970 to 1975 where he attended the City and Guilds of London Art School studying with Eric Morby. He also attended Goldsmith's College and the University of London, where he majored in printmaking. Moving to New York in 1975, he spent 10 years life drawing and investigating color. He experiments in most media, and is now primarily interested in oils and encaustic paints. In 2004, he exhibited his work at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, Connecticut, in a one man show. In 2006 he exhibited at Paesaggio Fine Arts’ 100 Pearl Street Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut. O’Shea has also shown at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, and the Guildhall in London. His work is included in many private collections. Mr. O’Shea divides his time between New York City and the Hudson River Valley.

Since the pandemic, this focus has become ever more apparent as her new acrylic paintings on paper demonstrate her intuitive process of reinterpreting literal subjects like leaves, flowers, birds, or bugs into vibrant worlds of layered color. She begins by drawing from life but then allows fluctuating colors, traces of the hand, and evidence of the physical medium to be introduced as the composition evolves and finds its final imprint on the surface. The spontaneity of her process welcomes the unknown, she explains: “The things that moved me first…might have become by now just a faint whispering.
