Julia Contacessi
"Second Sight, " Abstract Coastal Painting

2018

About the Item

This coastal abstract statement painting is made with acrylic paint on a large-scale canvas. The artist uses broad strokes of paint to layer light, muted blues, greys, and white on top of a deeper blue which can be seen at the bottom of the composition and showing through throughout. It has silver painted edges and is wired and ready to hang. It is signed and dated on the back of the canvas by the artist. Of this piece, the artist says, "This statement coastal abstract balances sweeping marks with intricate details delivering a sense of confidence." Connecticut-based artist Julia Contacessi earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in New York City in 2000. Over the years, her eye for composition coupled with her love of painting, design, and photography has earned Julia numerous awards in such publications as Photographer's Forum and Creativity along with inclusion into the Yale Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library Special Collections (ALSC) in New Haven, CT. Julia never strayed far from texture, paint and the mixing and layering of mediums, which are important components to her work. In fact, Julia's most recent abstracts focus on deconstructing painted color palette studies through isolated images, and then rebuilding those studies with new form and composition. Julia lives in Norwalk, Connecticut with her husband and son. She spends most weekends tackling new projects and getting into all sorts of adventures with her little guy, Neo. She loves painting & photography, the occasional 5 mile run and feisty discussions across the family dinner table on Sunday evenings. "When you layer on the paint just right, so that it dances across a wash of another color, a new level of dimension is created," Julia says of her work. "Combine that dimension with the exploration of color and I’ve just begun to captured something meaningful. My style is single-minded and focused on the simplicity of beauty in the moment. My goal is to drown out the noise and clutter to find a sense of calm through light. The end result is clean, fresh and modern." • "Restless Sea, " Contemporary Abstract Painting
    By Teodora Guererra
    Located in Westport, CT
This contemporary abstract statement painting by Teodora Guererra is made with acrylic and oil paint on canvas. It features a coastal palette, with layers of paint applied in wide, sweeping gestures, layering varying shades of blue over one another. The painting is signed by the artist on the back of the canvas, and is wired and ready to hang. Teodora Guererra’s abstract artistic vision has evolved throughout her years spent painting and teaching in Fairfield County, Connecticut; Tucson, Arizona, and upstate New York. Arizona’s naturally radiant landscape and arid climate led her to experiment with rich under-painting and vivid color; while the shifting seasons of the East Coast inspired Guererra to pursue dripping and staining techniques. Her focus has always been pushing the limits through experimentation with new materials. “As an artist, painting can be tormenting and sublime at the same time," the artist says of her work. "I'm a big risk taker, experimenting with different materials to layer, stain and saturate color on large canvases. My most successful work looks as if it happened all at once. It sometimes takes 7 or more paintings to produce a successful one and then it's a beautiful thing." Guererra received her undergraduate and graduate Art degrees from Southern Connecticut University, The College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College. Guererra’s paintings can be found in public and private collections across the U.S., including the Allmen Health and Wellness Center for Women in New York and SUNY Brockport, NY, William & Sonoma, San Francisco, CA. Her influences are Pat Steir, John McCracken, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Jud, Bernar Venet, Agnes Martin and Brian Rutenberg...
