About the Item
Kay Hartung’s “Bio System 3” builds layer upon layer of microscopic forms in encaustic and pastel. Gold metallic lines intersect the shapes as they travel across the images. In colors of ochres, greens and rusts on a creamy white ground, the painting is 20” x 20” on 1 5/8 in. deep birch panel. The painting is unframed and signed on the reverse by the artist.
Encaustic painting, a technique used by the ancient Greeks, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Encaustic is among the most beautiful of all artists' paints, and is as versatile as any 21st century medium. Due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture, encaustic is incredibly durable; it will not deteriorate, yellow, or darken over time, eliminating the need for protective varnish or glass.
Kay Hartung is an artist interested in the intersection of art and science, particularly the microscopic world. Her work has been included in exhibitions throughout the country and is in both private and corporate collections. Hartung is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
