Lawrence Calcagno was inspired by the landscapes of North Africa, Europe, and the American east coast. "Blue Painting" is thought to be an expansive seascape, capturing the moment where sea and sky meet. Lawrence "Larry" Calcagno attended the California School of Fine Arts on the GI Bill, from 1947-1950, where he was awarded first prize in painting from the San Francisco Museum of Fine Art. He then lived and worked in Europe and North Africa from 1950 to 1955, studying at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris Institute d’Arte Statale Floreiree. He continued to work and exhibit throughout his life, and is included in collections and museums internationally. His style ranges from meditative linear abstract landscapes to free-form abstract expressionism. His works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Boston, MA, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Currier Gallery of Art, New Hampshire, Guilford College Art Gallery, North Carolina, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Greensburg, PA
